Life in prison: A review of food quantity and quality

The Publication

HM Inspectorate of Prisons published a findings paper in 2016, reviewing existing literature on food in prisons.

It found that too often the quantity and quality of food provided is insufficient, and the conditions in which it is served and eaten undermine respect for prisoner's dignity.  Low food budgets are a major barrier to improving the food available in prisons, but that there is scope, even within budget restraints, to make improvements.

Our Response

We welcome this paper, and will continue to engage with the discussions to ensure that the very best possible nutrition is made available to those in custody. Currently the research needs to move further forward.
