The brain is the powerhouse of the central nervous system, responsible for thinking and learning, feeling, deciding, acting and reacting. Although it accounts for only about 2% of our body’s weight, the brain uses over 20% of the body’s energy supply, consuming glucose and oxygen constantly even as we sleep. Food supplies the energy for our brain to function, the raw materials for the neurotransmitters that influence communications in the brain and largely determines the operating environment for the brain. The right proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals are essential to brain structure and function, as is adequate fluid.
